WIMBLEDON INSPIRES PORTMARNOCK LADIES

Portmarnock’s ladies staged their very own Wimbledon—and toasted the day with a Pimm’s (or two).

Portmarnock Tennis Club turned Court 1 (and 2-6) white on July 5th as our ladies’ staged a home-grown Wimbledon celebration. Strawberries and cream, tennis whites, and—of course—Pimm’s set the scene for American tournament.

The rallies were lively, the laughs loud, and the courts were buzzing right up to the final whistle.

And the winners are…

After a series of close matches, we crowned:

  • Champion: Bríd Palmer

  • Joint runners-up: Deirdre Fleming & Rachel Creane

The trio were toasted in the Tennis Room, their prizes glinting almost as brightly as the Pimm’s glasses.

Hats off to the organisers

A tournament is only as smooth as its volunteers, and ours were ace:

  • Captains: Emma Burke & Helen Reid

  • Social maestro: Teresa Farrell

From drawing up the brackets to slicing the lemons for the post-match cocktails and decorating the tennis space in spectacular fashion, they delivered a day the players—and spectators—won’t forget.

Fun fact: Ireland’s own “Wimbledon”

Long before today’s Grand Slam circuit, the Irish Championships at Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club were considered every bit as prestigious as Wimbledon, the US Nationals, and the Northern Championships en.wikipedia.org. While that tournament’s star has faded, Portmarnock’s Wimbledon-inspired day proves Irish tennis tradition is alive and thriving— and who knows? Perhaps future internationals will be queuing for wild cards to our July classic!

See you on court—strawberries optional, celebratory spirit required!
