Welcome to Adult Tennis at Portmarnock Tennis Club! Find your perfect match, whether you’re aiming for competitive play or relaxed social games. Our welcoming community caters to all skill levels, ensuring everyone enjoys the sport they love.
Our adult tennis summer season is packed with the Club Championships, running from June to September! We offer diverse competitions for all levels, from seeded events to age-specific categories. The final two weeks are a thrilling crescendo, culminating in a Friday evening and all-day Saturday of finals. The celebration continues with our legendary ‘At Home’ event: a three-course dinner, dancing, and the championship prize-giving.
As the weather cools, the competition heats up with the Winter Shield (December to May). This features seeded Men’s, Ladies’, and Mixed Doubles, played in a round robin format leading to intense knockout stages. Enjoy competitive tennis all year round!
Inter-club leagues play a key role in the club’s competitive adult tennis scene. There are two main leagues in Dublin: the Dublin Lawn Tennis Council (DLTC) leagues and the Fingal Leagues. We field teams in as many classes as possible within the DLTC, while the Fingal League offers a great starting point for players new to league tennis. Leagues are announced via email, and there is a selection process for team placements.
Each team consists of three doubles pairings. Matches are on Sunday mornings for the men’s teams and afternoons for ladies’, usually beginning at the end of January.
Each team consists of seven players – two doubles pairings and three singles. Matches take place for ladies on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and men on Friday evenings and Saturday afternoons in early May-June.
Three mixed pairings with matches taking place on Friday evenings in July. Players must be age 18 by 31st December in the preceding year.
Each team consists of three doubles pairings within different age categories (over 35). Additional age categories are open depending on player availability. Matches for ladies take place on Sunday mornings starting in September.
Four players on each team. Each fixture is two singles matches and one doubles. Team captains draw lots on the night and this dictates who plays singles or doubles that evening. Matches take place on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings end of September/October.
At Portmarnock Tennis Club, we believe tennis is a great way to stay active and social. Our Social Tennis programme combines friendly competition and camaraderie for players of all skill levels. Our American Tournaments are open to all, with handicap games to ensure everyone can participate in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. Afterwards, players gather for food and drinks in the clubhouse. Keep an eye on your email for tournament announcements—spaces fill up fast!
We also love to celebrate special occasions like Christmas and Halloween, often with fun dress-up events. Plus, our members are dedicated to supporting social causes through charity events. Community is at the heart of everything we do.
We have tennis ladders for both men and women, covering singles and doubles. A tennis ladder ranks players based on their ability, with each step corresponding to a ranking. Players start with an initial ranking and can challenge each other to improve their position. The aim is to climb the ladder, making it a fun way to meet other members and enjoy the game. It’s suitable for all skill levels.
Take a look at the Ladies’ Doubles Ladder competition page for more details
Round Robin is a popular internal competition for ladies, offering both singles and doubles formats. Players are grouped by skill level, ensuring a competitive yet enjoyable experience. After each round, the top players are promoted, while the lowest-scoring players are relegated. It’s a great way to practice, meet new members, and have fun while improving your game.
We regularly host Club Nights for members, offering a relaxed atmosphere for social tennis followed by refreshments in the tennis room. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet fellow members, enjoy some friendly competition, and refine your tennis skills in a laid-back setting.
